Technology makes our lives easier and more interesting in many ways. However, it's like a planet, always in motion. Not that I don't appreciate it, but at times it gets hard to keep up with the rate at which things change. Take a look at Facebook. For me, I gave up on trying to keep track of the new developments. At one point someone even suggested we call it The-ever-changing book.
Apple is one of the leaders in technology today, at least in my opinion. Every year they release new iPhones, iPads, etc, and their respective software versions. In last year's iOS 6, one of the new features to email was the VIP inbox. Today was the first time I opened it to see what it is about, how it works. But I found myself thinking about different things, and finally here I am writing this post.
VIP can mean a lot of things. If you asked me 12 years ago I probably would have answered VIP meant Ventilated Improved Pit Latrine. <Oops, I hope I didn't spoil your meal> Some years after, maybe I'd say Very Intelligent Person. I don't know what my answer will be in the years to come. Perhaps something that doesn't exist as of now.
In iOS 6's case, VIP stands for Very Important Person. Today I was thinking, how important is very important? Maybe before we go to very important, lets's think about how important is important. I wonder, who decides who is important and who isn't? It's not like there is a way we measure one's importance.
Personally I think VIP one of those acronyms that have become a cliché these days. It's used at concerts where there is VIP ticket for the premium tickets, nightclubs where you find VIP section, or at games where there are the VIP stands. Even in hotels some services come with the option of VIP service. At concerts, nightclubs or games, usually the VIP costs more than the ordinary. Perhaps the more money you have, the more important you are. But in life is it really like that... I wonder.
In society, there are those people we label as "very important". They may be doctors, politicians, leaders, or nothing like that at all, depending on where you are. But are they truly that important. If say there was a way to measure a persons importance, would they still be VIP?
These days most, if not all email service providers have the spam folder/feature. Computers can sort mail and sieve out garbage from what's important. Some providers like Gmail have gone a step further and added the "Important" folder. It has a way of sorting based on the content of the email, putting aside what it thinks you consider important and you'll want to read first. But that's still email.
There really isn't any quantitative way of measuring how important one is. Well, with this ever advancing technology, you never know, tomorrow's newest invention may be a VIP-meter. How important do you think your reading will be on the VIP-meter...? (Just thinking)
